So, let's start off. The holidays were kind of awful. My parents left on a trip for Christmas, so I spent Christmas with the Lau Family. While I do like Alex's parents, his sister get's me all up in arms for a multitude of reasons and this Christmas was no exception. It just left a bad taste and I hope for a much better Christmas next year. New Years was nice, I had my usual fondue party and it was hella fun. Probably one of the most successful New Years Party's yet. My friend Jurian came and so did almost everyone I invited.
Alex has been working very hard to get SpaceCats in Space shown in different conventions. He submitted his game to multiple venue's and was eventually picked to be showcased at MagFest. His animator, Rachel, ended up flying out from Australia to help him and they were very successful. He now has about 1000 people on his mailing list and it grows even more at every convention he attends. Alex is heading to PAX East and Indiecade East in April and we will have a booth at ACBC. Rachel has also decided that she loves helping Alex and has decided to move to the USA temporarily to help SpaceCats become more successful as well as grow her own freelance animation business. We are thrilled to have her here!
The next couple of months were almost uneventful in terms of work, but things started getting really rocky. The manager, who is the sister of the owners and has never worked in healthcare or management before, started making life hard for me. She tried to control every aspect of my work and made me feel like crap almost every day for not being "perfect" in her mind. In the end, the straw that broke the camels back was when she took away our chairs as a "punishment" for not listening to her (or something similar). Alex and I ended up going to the owners, trying to renegotiate our contract (which had me working at a very low salary in the first place) and receive more autonomy. In the end, I decided I did not need a job where I get underpaid and not allowed to have control over my license. So I told the owners if they didn't have any paperwork detailing what they were going to do about the issues, then I wasn't going to show up for work at the beginning of the week. And I didn't. Whether it was the right thing to do or not is debatable, but I think it was worth not getting an ulcer or ending up in jail. Within a week of doing this, I had another job where I am paid more and have better hours. So #sorrynotsorry.
Alex also started up a new job. With the growth of SpaceCats, Alex realized that he also needed to amp up the amount of money he was putting into this game. Unfortunately, his savings had depleted a good amount, as he started Robotic Potato about 2 years ago and has not worked on anything else since. So he applied and started to work for a credit card fraud company called Pinpoint. They seem good to him and we have health insurance now, which is a plus. We are back to being DINKs and it definitely is improving our lives.
So yeah, once again, change has come to us, but it's all for the better. Updating my resume made me realize the spectrum of experience I have and I am starting to realize that it's not necessarily a bad thing.
