My life has been pretty boring since coming back from GenCon. However, GenCon itself was absolutly amazing. Everything went as planned, no real issues and we had an blast.
Our first night there was spent just Alex and I going to the famous St Elmo's steakhouse in Indianapolis. The food was great and we were excited to eat there. Apparently, they have the best shrimp cocktail in the country and were featured on the show Parks & Recreation.
Thursday is when things heated up and we spent it gaming and crafting. Alex wanted to be first in line to get pre-released minatures for his Warmachine game, so I ended up wandering around and meeting up with our other friends that came with us. Then we hung out at the exhibit hall playtesting games for a couple of hours. Then I went to go craft soap, which was a lot of fun. Then I met back up with our friends and we went out for Chicago deep dish pizza at a local place called South of Chicago. Amazing deep dish pizza!
Friday was another day of gaming. Alex and I ended up playing an RPG game with the author of the RPG game. That was pretty awesome. We asked him a couple of questions and ended up being a bit fan-girlish. We also ended up meeting my friend Jonathan, who I had known back when I lived in Erie, PA and was going to pharmacy school. I had not seen him in about 6 years, but we picked up right where we left off as friends. It was a great reunion and even Alex liked talking to him. We were actually convinced to play the game he was promoting and ended up buying all the minatures for it. So now I have a complete boxed set of Malifaux. Haha.
Saturday was the day all my friends and I went through True Dungeon. Having more people I knew made it so much more fun. It was something none of my friends (other than Alex) had done before, so it was quite a thrill for them. Afterwards, we celebrated by going to this restaurant that had a special for all the GenCon attendees. It was a 32oz burger with all the fixin's. Alex and I decided not to partake in the challenge, but all our friends ordered and managed to eat what is essentially a 2 pound burger. It was the size of a dinner plate. After that, our friends decided it was time to go home and rest, but that didn't stop Alex and I. Earlier in the day, we had met one of Alex's old friend, David, who had written a book about DnD called "Of Dice And Men" and was signing at the convention. He contacted us and we ended up going out for drinks with David and all of Alex's old gaming pals from before I met Alex. It was awesome to hear old stories about Alex's early gaming days.
Sunday was quiet, it was pretty much just buying whatever we needed that we hadn't gotten earlier and leaving. But man, that was the best GenCon I've had. Plus, all the flights were on time and we did not have any trouble getting home.
Since then, I've been trying to work on putting my pharmacy together. It's been mostly just getting my contract set up, which took a lot more time than expected. However, the good news is I did get a good amount of per diem work with another pharmacy who's employees seem to love me. So my confidence is back up a bit from the hole it was beaten into by the hospital job. I know that this pharmacy will be worth it.
I will also be going to Hong Kong in a week. My boyfriend's cousin is getting married in Manila, Phillipines, so we are heading out there to go to the wedding, then back to Hong Kong to research family history for Alex's mother's family. Should be a lot of fun. Once I get back from that (if I do make it back, considering this shutdown) then I will most likely be opening the pharmacy and starting to drum up business for that.
This 5 months of semi-unemployment has actually been really nice. I feel more relaxed, better about myself and less frazzled. There have been some struggles, since my confidence in my ability as a pharmacist was really destroyed be horrible people who wanted nothing more that to hurt me as best they could. But with the help of my friend Tiffany, who is a pharmacist in Florida, I've been slowly realizing that what they said was not me, it was them, and that I am a good, knowledgeable pharmacist. I look forward to getting my own business and actually working for myself.
